Olympus OUT, Nikon IN
A year and a half ago, hubby and myself decided to buy a high end semi-professional camera at RM1,900. Its some Olympus branded camera that had 10X Zoom with Wide Angle lens. Its not a DSLR but its a good start for semi-pros. Just slightly a year and a half later, the Olympus camera started having problem focusing, so we sent it back for servicing. When we were asked to bring the camera back after 1 full month, it couldn’t ‘on’ at all. It was completely useless - worst than when we sent it back. We sent it back again for servicing. After another month, we went to collect it and the problem is still not solved. So, we sent it back for servicing the third time. Together with that, we sent a complaint to Olympus.
They called and told us that the 2nd year warranty that we purchased did not originate from Olympus but was from an insurance company. Thus, it was sent to another servicing centre, and not Olympus. Shit. No one ever said that 2nd year warranty is not from Olympus! Now, we are stuck with a faulty camera and Olympus is not going to own up to this RM1,900 camera that went kaput in just 1 1/2 year. Its not a cheap camera, mind you! The insurance company called and gave us two option (1) Accept a settlement of RM1,000 (2) They will repair the camera up to the limit of RM1,500 that it was insured for. If the camera is still faulty after that, we will have to pay to repair it. If all else fails, the camera is as good as gone. What choice did I have then? Of course I had to take the RM1,000.
I swear never to buy another Olympus ever again. We bought the camera in good faith, thinking that it will serve us well. RM1,900!!! Not a couple of hundreds. Now, its a useless junk. Anyway, we took the RM1,000 settlement and exchanged for a new Nikon camera. I just want to forget about the whole Olympus ordeal, but one thing for sure, everyone I know will hear of my bad experience with Olympus.
