Everyone deserves a chance
As a superior, I hold on to the principle that everyone of my staff deserves a chance, to show his or her maximum potential. For one reason or another, I tend to have very high expectations on the new staff. And it probably create a lot of tension for them. Well, my bosses have even higher expectation on them as they view marketing as the heart of the operation - the team that will make or break the team.
Nevertheless, I will give them a chance, not once, not twice but as many times as required until they improve towards my expecation. Marketing is definately not something easy, as many think. When I see those people who apply for the job, they come with expectation that it is an easy job. One that they can come at 9am and go back at 6pm. In reality, marketing is a high-tension job, and you need to think on your feet at all times. Most of the people whom I have interviewed thinks that they have some sort of flexibility to honeymoon as they work. But when I told them of what to expect, most of them cannot meet the expectation to be an independent and self-starter in carrying out their duties.
These days, its not easy to get a good marketing person. Good ones are few and expensive. The ‘lying low fruits’ are cheaper but in terms of quality are not able to carry out the task of a marketing person.
